THE QUESTION EVERYONE ASKS:
Why and how do you use a Magnetometer to search for targets?
The Magnetometer is a support instrument, ideal for searching effectively for deep buried targets composed of even a small percentage of steel or iron (think meteorite or iron bound chest). A Magnetometer does not replace a Pulse Induction detector such as a Deepers MF, a very essential piece of equipment for professional treasure hunters. The Magnetometer will compliment the detector and is something that every serious prospector should have to locate deposits of magnetic black sand. As gold and black sand are found together in gold bearing areas a magnetometer to locate streaks or deposits of black sand and the ability to know the length, width and depth of the deposit will pay for itself many times over.
It is a well known fact that in many cases a great part of hidden treasures discovered contain iron objects or are contained in iron or iron bound containers. The following examples have all been used to bury treasure in and have served as treasure chests: Sailors footlocker, travel trunks or pirate trunks, (locks, corners, handles and reinforcements made of iron), oil drums, old cookie tins or chocolate tins made of white iron, many types of tea cans and many other kinds of tin cans, chests or jewelry boxes with iron locks ( the kind used from the 14th century up to the 1950s to keep gold coins, jewelry and important papers- hidden inside another chest on top of an armoire or in a cave or buried in case of danger or necessity for example). Not to forget the big armored chests (one was found buried 12 feet deep in an old well of a great mansion that use to belong to a Nazi leader during the years 1930-1945). These were used to hide great riches, they would hide a chest in a hole, in a well and they were also buried in a hurry sometimes.
The containers also frequently had iron objects or iron tools in them that are found very easily with a Magnetometer. For this same reason, lots of times old pistols, revolvers and shot guns are common to find (thousands of old arms are found buried and are worth a real fortune today). Objects that contain iron or steel such as old steel or iron steel weapons (knives of many sorts, swords, sabers and others) are all part of these types of valuables and constitute by themselves a real treasure.
Wanting to eliminate any possible target with magnetic resonance could lead to missing a great find due to the fact that 80% of the treasures found contain iron.
We would like to mention that with time, iron rusts and is very rapidly diluted in the earth around the target producing a halo with which the possibilities of discovering it with a Magnetometer increase considerably.
This important phenomenon should be considered and taken into account since it increases the possibilities for discoveries.
Gold prospecting: Note that prospecting for gold with a Deepers MAG 505 Magnetometer can be of great help because you can precisely localize deep deposits of black magnetized sand, associated with gold deposits. You can have wonderful success following an old river bed and systematically look for places with large quantities of black sand. This is the fastest method since a lot of effort is not required and with the help of a rod provided with a helicoidally drill bit at the tip, you can easily probe the terrain, taking samples and detecting in this manner any presence of noble metal without having to dig up the whole place.
Taking samples manually (at the bottom the black sand and the gold)
Another of the Magnetometers aspects that is no less important is the use of the instrument as a counter measure. In case the prospector or treasure hunter, for very precise reasons wishes to find only non iron targets (searches of ancient relics and artifacts from before the iron age, known as pre-Columbian period in Latin America or a prehistoric era up to the bronze age in Europe or for some other specific search as for gold nuggets) it is very interesting to be able to identify the targets with iron ore so as to not delay his hunt with unnecessary digging interrupt the search uselessly and continue on prospecting. In such a case the Pulse Induction detector can be used. Deepers MF for example associated with a Magnetometer can localize targets placing small plastic or wood stakes to mark the site. Then you can go back over the sites with a Magnetometer. If the MAG 505 reacts you can discard the site for it will be a ferrous target. This is fast and effectiveplus this way you dont work strenuously and dig for nothing.
Determining the depth of a target: Using a MAG 505 Magnetometer permits you to know with some precision the depth of a target. Only this apparatus permits this by using a simple method that only takes a few minutes and you will know how deep the object is. We will explain this procedure later on. This very important breakthrough in detecting technology is just one of the examples of how Deepers engineers have solved some of the problems associated with deep searches for treasure. With this method we can rapidly know the depth of the detected target and determine if it is worth something or not. For example, you can eliminate all the shallow targets considering they are just modern day trash and not an ancient deep deposit that could be very valuable. Less time lost, less work and more discoveries.
Comments on different Magnetometers: There are a great variety of Magnetometers. The Magnetometers such as the proton Magnetometer are the most commonly known. These use 2 containers placed on either side of a big tub. This receptacle contains kerosene. A strong magnetic discharge is produced around the liquid which aligns the hydrogen protons (the water or the hydrocarbon). Any abnormality in the magnetic field (a ferrous target, an iron vein, ferrous oxide, volcanic rock, mineral fluctuations or hydro thermals from the subsoil) produce a disorientation of the protons, thus interrupting the signal to the meter that marks this with numbers that are displayed randomly without knowing exactly what has been picked up. If the equipment is connected to a data memorization system, this information can later be analyzed with an appropriate 3D computer program where you can see the information in the form of mapsTo be interpreted (making things even more difficult)!
There are also other types of Magnetometers such as the cesium for example, but as a general rule, these kinds of instruments are reserved for geophysicists and can not be used by a common prospector that wants to immediately know, in a simple way, if there is a target and at what depth. The Deepers MAG 505 does do this since it utilizes the Fluxgate system that is much more flexible and efficient for this type of search.
MAG Magnetometer System: The Deepers MAG 505 is basically built with two very sensitive sensors called fluxgates, made of two very small opposing electric coils wound in opposite directions and around a small bar of a special alloy that receives a controlled saturated flow. These two sensors are placed in an inverse form some 25 inches one from the other, built into the head of the Magnetometer which will be placed vertically (or almost vertically) to the ground during the whole search process. If the magnetic field varies locally due to the presents of a ferrous metal, even if this is deep, the signal in the head of the sensor will become unbalanced (positively or negatively) with the second compensator sensor higher in the tube, this will produce a modification of the phase that in the end will be transformed into a audible threshold by the electronic apparatus with a secondary numerical indication on the LCD.
Contrary to the Pulse detectors (active apparatus) that send strong electromagnetic current thru the ground, kind of radiating the metals that are buried, the Deepers Magnetometer MAG 505 is a measurement instrument (passive apparatus) exceptionally precise that the only thing it does is analyze the modifications in the local magnetic field. This information is immediately interpreted and the presence of metal is signaled by a threshold and by the LCD screen. The MAG 505 is light weight (2.5lbs.) with a very comfortable ergonomic arm (that is also collapsible) and requires only a few minutes to learn how to operate it.

Detection Efficiency:
The detection sensibility of the Deepers MAG 505 can be adjusted by means of the strength meter that is right at hand for the operator. This way adjustment on the equipment can be made according to the depth chosen for the search.
The MAG 505s efficiency is exceptional:
A 4 inch long knife will be detected buried at 12 to 16 inches.
A pistol will be localized at 24 inches deep or up to 32 inches deep depending on the amount of iron it contains.
A jewelry box with dimensions 12 x 6 x 4 inches with a lock will be detected buried at a depth of 51 inches.
A cookie tin, 10 x 10 x 4 inches, will be localized buried at over 51 inches deep.
A rifle can be detected at over 60 inches deep depending on the amount of iron it contains.
A big 5 gallon oil can is detected at 6 feet.
A traveling trunk is detected at 6 feet.
An iron trunk, like the military use, will be detected at 12 feet deep.
A safe can be detected at 13 feet deep.
A guns deposit (depending on the size) can be found at 5 feet deep
A black sand deposit (important for gold prospectors) can be detected, depending on its volume, any where from 9 to 12 feet deep.
Note: Detecting a target is very important, but localizing it with precision is also very important. Many detectors can find a target, but indicating where one is exactly will make your digging much easier and precise. No digging big holes. The Deepers MAG 505 can localize a deep target and give you a precise (plus or minus 4 inches) vertical position on the surface with great ease. You can actually trace out a streak of black sand in gold bearing areas and know exactly how deep and how far along to dig.
How to determine the depth of a target with a MAG 505: Start by precisely localizing a target, next with the head of the arm in a vertical position, zero in on the target to determine the center. Now tilt the arm to a 45 degree angle more or less. Move until you get a strong threshold. The distance between the two points (between the center of the target and the second strong threshold) corresponds to the depth of the target. It doesnt get any easier than this.
With a little experience, a good operator will be able to determine the depth in a couple of minutes within a precision of 4 inches, for a target buried 3 feet deep.
